Support Kids & Clays and SCTP at Registered Shoot

June 28, 2018 By Sherry Kerr

The Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) is partnering with the Kids & Clays Foundation to hold a registered two-day sporting clays charity event at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio.

The event will be held Friday and Saturday, July 20-21, during SSSF’s Scholastic Clay Target Program National Championships. The event is open to the public, parents, and coaches of athletes attending the SCTP Nationals, as well as the athletes themselves.

All registrants for the event will be entered into a drawing for a large prize package of firearms and outdoor and shooting gear worth more than $14,000. Prizes, donated by many great sponsors, are listed below.

Click here to sign up for this event today. See registration instructions. You can also download the registration form, complete it, and follow the instructions for submission.

The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) is the nation’s leader in youth development shooting sports programs.  The Kids & Clays Foundation supports a series of shooting events across the country with all proceeds benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities. All proceeds from this special two-day event will help each organization fulfill their mission.

“We’re not only happy to partner with Kids & Clays on this event but are thrilled to be able to offer such a large prize package just for participating in the event,” said Tom Wondrash, SCTP National Program Director. “This event will make for a great ending to what is shaping up as record-setting National Championships at Cardinal.”

Besides the great prizes, top finishers in this registered event will be recognized with trophies.

A portion of the proceeds, through the Kids & Clays Foundation, benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities, who provide housing and other help to tens of thousands of critically ill children and their families across the country each year.

“We are blessed to be associated with such a quality organization as the SCTP,” said Doug Jeanneret, Kids & Clays Foundation executive director. “We certainly invite all who have an interest in shooting and also in helping youth to attend this marquis event.”

Proceeds will also benefit the SCTP’s scholarship program providing assistance to graduating high school seniors continuing their education in college. Scholarship applications are available on the SSSF’s website.

SCTP/SASP Nationals at Cardinal Center

July 22, 2017 By Sherry Kerr

Buckeye Elite
Members of the Buckeye Elite Shooting Team compete at the SCTP Nationals.

The 2017 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) National Championships brought together competitive shooters, ages 8 to 23, from 32 states to compete for national titles in the shotgun disciplines of Skeet, Skeet Doubles, Sporting Clays, American Trap, Handicap Trap, Bunker Trap, and Trap Doubles. Pistol and rifle competitors competed for action steel-shooting titles in Rimfire Pistol, Centerfire Pistol, Iron Sight Rifle and Optics Rifle divisions. The event was July 8-15 at Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio.

This was SCTP-SASP’s largest Nationals since the inception of its umbrella organization, the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) in 2007, with 213 SCTP and 49 SASP registered teams participating. With 916 registered skeet competitors and 1002 registered sporting clays competitors during the week-long event, SCTP Nationals will likely be the largest registered skeet tournament this year and among the top 5 of the NSCA registered tournaments this year.

  • 1,043,100 Competitive rounds were fired by 2,687 shooting sports competitors from 32 states during the 8-day event. Including games and practice, approximately 1.4 million rounds were fired.
  • Participation in the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) increased 19.5%, from 2013 to 2017 (from 1883 to 2251 athletes)
  • Participation in the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) increased 119%, from 2013 to 2017 (from 199 to 436 athletes)
  • Women are the fastest growing segment of the shooting sports, making up 18% of the National Championship competitors (16% of SCTP shooters, 30% of SASP shooters).
  • This year teams earned $425,000 (SCTP) and $84,750 (SASP) in MidwayUSA Foundation Team Endowment Funds .
  • With the support of many industry friends and supporting sponsors, including NSSA-NSCA, SSSF has awarded $100,000 in scholarships to SCTP and SASP member athletes this season.
  • SCTP and SASP make up the largest youth shooting program in the country with over 16,211 youth athletes in 45 states (14,854 in SCTP and 1,357 in SASP) participating as member athletes this year.
  • 6.3 million clay targets were thrown during the 2016-17 SCTP competition season (based on school year cycle) as recorded by the SSSF’s team registration and event management system.

SSSF BOD Chairman Louise Terry summarized the event saying, “The SCTP/SASP Nationals, held each year in July, has grown as the programs have grown over the years, and has now become THE major event in our annual schedule. For our team coaches, student athletes and their families, it represents the culmination of all of their hard work throughout the past school year and gives them the opportunity to spend a week with their families and teams participating in the shooting sports that they love. Competition is by age category, so kids of all ages are competing against their peers from all across the country in their own age groups. There is tremendous camaraderie, and many new friendships are made while old ones are renewed.”

Immediately following the SCTP/SASP Nationals on July 24-29, the SCTP staff will host the 2017 SCTP International Shotgun Championships at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, in conjunction with USA Shooting.

Next year’s SCTP/SASP Nationals will be July 14-21, 2018, and it will again be hosted at the Cardinal Center.

Legacy Gift Offers Unique Opportunity to Support Youth Shooting

September 4, 2016 By Sherry Kerr

Two years ago, NSSA member Charles Gates died, leaving a wonderful legacy gift in his estate. Unbeknownst to either organization at the time, Mr. Gates had structured his estate to donate his prized Krieghoff shotgun collection to be sold and the proceeds to support the youth shooting initiatives of both the NSSA and the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF). While his estate benefited from the tax advantages of planned giving, his thoughtfulness also enabled him to further his passion to support youth shooting long after his passing.

One gun from Mr. Gates’ 10-gun collection now remains to be sold. This is a highly engraved K-20 Majestic Grade, Serial #001149, with gold lions, engraved by renowned Krieghoff engraver Kathrin Nonn. It is a 20 gauge with 30″ barrels, a #5 skeet stock and Schnabel forearm. The selling price is $40,000 and this beautiful gun can be viewed during the upcoming World Skeet Championships and National Sporting Clays Championship in the Alamo Sporting Arms showroom at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio. You can also view the gun details on the Alamo Sporting Arms website at www.alamosportingarms.com.

Questions about this K-20 maybe be directed to Pam Young at Alamo Sporting Arms at pam@alamosportingarms.com.

Louise Terry, Past President of NSSA and currently serving as Board Chairman of SSSF, comments, “This is a unique chance to own a special masterpiece while supporting the youth shooting programs of both the NSSA and SSSF’s Scholastic Clay Target Program. Both NSSA and SSSF are focused on teaching our young adults the attributes of good fellowship, good sportsmanship, and firearm safety through our shotgun sports while reinforcing strong American family values. It also is a wonderful example of the power of planned giving, which can benefit your personal estate as well as charitable 501(c)(3) organizations like NSSA and SSSF. Thank you for helping us introduce and encourage many young adults who otherwise would not have a chance to know and enjoy the shooting sports we love.”
