Jason Ward Wins 2018 Krieghoff Masters

Spring finally arrived last week for about 270 shooters who traveled to sunny Savannah, Georgia, for the Krieghoff Masters Skeet Championships at Forest City Gun Club. Jason Ward, 2017 HOA World Skeet Champion, walked away with the Masters HOA Championship title after posting the lone 397. Shooting off 396s were Mark Vaillancourt, who finished second, Michael E. Schmidt, third place, and Pam Larrowe, who earned the Ladies title.

In preparation for the 2018 Krieghoff Masters, NSSA Chief Mechanic Barney Brown worked with the Forest City Gun Club team to ensure that the traps were properly set up and the targets were being thrown in a consistent manner. In all, 20 fields were set up to throw targets for the competitors at the Krieghoff Masters, including six dedicated practice fields. When practice started, it was noticed that there was an unusual delay on the practice fields, which was quickly identified by Barney as an electrical problem that was resolved by swapping out some equipment. The result was that all fields were back up and running properly within 30 minutes. Kudos to Barney and the Forest City Gun Club team for responding so quickly to ensure that shooters were able to practice prior to the shoot even starting.

Vote for Your NSSA Directors

Voting is now open for NSSA Directors, with members voting for representatives from each U.S. state, Canadian province, U.S. military branch, and several other countries. Ballots have been emailed to members with a link for online voting. The deadline to vote is June 30, 2018, and the new Board of Directors will serve the term of January 1, 2019 through December 31, 2020.

Military members – active duty, retired and veteran – may vote for a Director in either their branch of service OR in their state. They may not vote for both. To vote in your military branch, you must have your military credentials on file with NSSA.

Open Letter to Our Membership

Below is an open letter to NSSA-NSCA members and governing bodies:

February 23, 2018

Further to our letter published to NSSA-NSCA membership in January regarding the 2018 winter executive meetings (see “Target Talk” dated January 24, 2018), we feel it is important to keep all members up to date on the latest association business.

Subsequent to the NSCA Advisory Council session in San Antonio, January 19-20, 2018, progress has been made by the Advisory Council members who have signed their Conflict of Interest (COI) form and who have agreed to continue to serve in their duly-elected Advisory Council positions. Under the leadership of Anthony Matarese, Jr., AC members who were not in attendance have been contacted to further discuss details of the required COI form to answer questions and clarify issues in an attempt to reach as many as possible who are interested and willing to continue to support the future of the NSCA by serving on the Advisory Council. We now have a quorum of Advisory Council members who are working on behalf of the membership. Below is the list of all Advisory Council members who have signed the COI form as of February 23, 2018, keeping in mind that anyone who has not signed the COI form will not be engaged in the conduct of NSCA Advisory Council/Executive Council business. Also listed are those who have resigned from their position on the Advisory Council.

Please note that an elected AC member who has not signed the COI form or who has resigned may have done so for reasons unrelated to the subversive activities described on January 24, and you should not infer any specific motive by their resignation or choice not to sign the document.

The current NSCA governance structure specifies a 45-person Advisory Council and an Executive Council. This structure was put into place at the inception of NSCA 29 years ago, prior to the existence of elected National Delegates or State/Regional organizations and when no infrastructure existed. During this period of transition, active Advisory Council members are now undertaking a review of the structure of the governing bodies, as well as a defining charter document for NSCA.

On another topic, last fall the association engaged a consulting firm to inform and guide NSSA-NSCA leadership regarding opportunities and possible plans for future association fundraising activities. NSSA-NSCA has received some generous, unsolicited gifts and has had members express interest in making future gifts to support their favorite missions. The fundraising firm has been tasked with determining what types of programs need to be in place to facilitate that. To gain input and direction from our membership at large, all NSSA and NSCA members recently received a questionnaire by email seeking to collect member views and information. This will help guide future decisions on this topic and provide direction to make such activities more successful for the future of our organization.

As we move ahead on all these activities, we welcome your input and comments. Please feel free to call or email either of us with your thoughts.

NSSA Searching for Chief Youth Instructor

The National Skeet Shooting Association in San Antonio, Texas, is now accepting applications for the independent contractor position of NSSA Chief Youth Instructor. Candidates must possess, at a minimum, an NSSA Level I Instructor certification. Candidates must have knowledge of skeet shooting, the standard methods of teaching shooting from the NSSA instructors courses, and the NSSA Youth Camp Program.

Candidates must be able to coordinate with gun clubs, camp directors, and the NSSA Director of Skeet and his staff to ensure camps are being conducted as intended. The Chief Youth Instructor must conduct youth camps as necessary, communicate with those interested in hosting a youth camp, and communicate with staff at NSSA headquarters as required. The Chief Youth Instructor is the primary organizer of NSSA youth camps as well as the primary conductor of the camps for clubs that need assistance. All prospective candidates must possess effective verbal and written communicative skills and basic computer knowledge.

This is a remote position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE NSSA CHIEF YOUTH INSTRUCTOR

  • Operate the National Skeet Shooting Association Youth Camp Program
  • Oversee, schedule, and administer all youth camps. The Chief Youth Instructor does not have to attend all camps but will be responsible for the completion of the camps, conducting camps when necessary or finding a suitable certified instructor to conduct camps when unavailable
  • Work closely with and provide support to camp clubs, camp directors, and camp instructors
  • Interface with the NSSA Director of Skeet and his staff to ensure coordinated operations
  • Manage administration and reporting for Youth Skeet Camps, including providing each attendee with a Complimentary Limited Membership (CLM), ensuring that clubs have met requirements for funding, and submitting all reports to NSSA headquarters
  • Manage all logistics of hosting a camp in coordination with the host club. This includes working with the club and camp director to gather local instructors to help with the camps, when necessary. Camps require one instructor for each group of five students.
  • Ensure each camp attendee that completes the camp receives a certificate of completion following the camp
  • Provide up-to-date information and summaries of camp activity for inclusion on MyNSSA.com, in Clay Target Nation magazine, and in Target Talk newsletter
  • Expand and grow the NSSA Youth Camp Program throughout all the zones

  2. Must be computer literate capable of communicating via email and using spreadsheets
  3. Must be capable of maintaining information for submission to Clay Target Nation magazine and Target Talk newsletter

Personal

  1. Be able to work with groups constructively
  2. Be recognized as an instructor and be knowledgeable about youth camps
