Missing the U.S. Open? Shoot the Essential Open

With the inaugural Kolar U.S. Open iShoot postponed until 2021 due to the pandemic and no U.S. Open this year, many members are missing the opportunity to shoot at the much-anticipated event. There is now an event for you to shoot that same weekend, June 27-28, to mirror the format of the U.S. Open iShoot, the 2020 Essential Open iShoot. According to Clark Hartness, the Zone VI Executive Committeeman who created the Essential Open, flexibility is the key, offering the opportunity for any interested NSSA club to host a shoot for its members as part of the iShoot. Clubs can participate as a host club with as few as 5 members shooting.

Currently, the following clubs have signed on to participate, with the possibility of more to come:

Hartness says he registered the 2020 Essential Open iShoot because “I believe it is essential that we return to some semblance of normal, even if it is a new normal.” He will manage the event through the iShoots platform he developed and which would have been used for the U.S. Open iShoot.

Participating clubs must be NSSA member clubs, have a licensed copy of Mike Valerio’s Skeet Manager application (www.skeetsoftware.com), and have internet access. Inaugural Kolar U.S. Open Postponed to 2021

The NSSA Executive Committee, U.S. Open Committee, U.S. Open host clubs, and our sponsor have collaborated and concluded the inaugural Kolar U.S. Open is untenable in the current climate. In accordance with NSSA’s COVID-19 policy, we have placed our members’ health and safety at the forefront of our decision as we considered the respective state parameters and associated risk to host this event.

The inaugural Kolar U.S. Open is rescheduled for June 25-27, 2021. Each of the 10 clubs selected for this year’s event will host in 2021.

Thanks to the 815 registered shooters and their desire to participate in this unique event as we endeavor to expand the U.S. Open to multiple clubs across the United States. Registered participants will receive more information on Monday, May 11, and you can monitor posts at nssausopen.com.

A special thanks for the support and dedication of our host clubs since the inception of the i-shoot U.S. Open format. Each of the clubs has conducted i-shoot training during the previous two months in preparation for this event. Thanks to Clark Hartness for his vision and dedication to build the premiere event.

Final Shots: Louis Mosel

NSSA regrets to report the death on May 6 of Louis Mosel of San Antonio, a Life Member who was Captain of at least 9 All-American Teams.

Louis has been described as a full-time businessman, husband, father, buddy, friend, hunter, fisherman, craftsman and builder. He became a master plumber and worked at L.C. Mosel Co. from 1947 until his retirement in 2017. He loved building and construction so much that he built four boats in his lifetime, the largest being a 30′ twin-engine off-shore deep sea fishing vessel named the Sea Pauper which took five years of evenings and weekends to build. While in the process of building his fifth boat, a 42-foot yacht, he was introduced to the game of skeet by his son Kurt. Louis got the skeet bug and the boat was forgotten.

Louis took up skeet with the same vigor and determination as he did with all of his other hobbies. He competed in tournaments all over the U.S., winning numerous medals (476 trophies and awards are documented) and was named Captain of the Senior Veteran 1st Team for the NSSA All-American Team three years in a row. Louis was NSSA All-American Veteran Team Captain six times from 2000 to 2007 and Senior Veteran Team Captain for the Texas Skeet Shooting Association six times from 2009 to 2014.

At the age of 87, during the 2014 World Skeet Shooting Championships, he and his shooting partner Robert Myers broke six world records in the two-man team Senior Veterans event. Later in his life, after the seas were too rough, the shotguns were too heavy and getting to the office was a job in itself, he continued working on his stamp collection. Louis collected stamps his entire life and amassed a phenomenal collection. Louis was a life member of the NRA, the Texas State Skeet Shooting Association, the National Skeet Shooting Association, and the San Antonio Gun Club.

Update from the NSSA Executive Committee

Friends, as we reported earlier, your Executive Committee and presidential committees have been working diligently to assure the future of our association during these unprecedented times. Our headquarters staff has been continually working and monitoring all of our associations functions. Your EC has been meeting at least once a week. Minutes from these meetings are published on our website.

Your joint NSCA-NSSA Finance Committee has been working with our CFO and others to model various scenarios concerning our spending and potential income for the balance of the year. Proposals have been approved by the EC, and next steps are in the works. Details are in our weekly minutes.

Headquarters’ application for stimulus Payroll Protection Plan dollars was applied for and approved by our bank. Funding occurred last week. This is great news, since we currently have very limited income. In reality, this stimulus money should manifest itself as a grant, since we will meet the criteria for retaining employees and spending the funds as specified.

We’re interested in hearing how our membership and clubs are spending this slowdown and would like to interview some members and clubs for potential stories in Clay Target Nation. Have clubs found ways to offer shooting while maintaining social distancing and following local guidelines? We wish we could report that the worst is over and everything is business as usual. Unfortunately, that is not the case, and things change almost daily. Knowing that, your headquarters staff, along with its volunteer army, will continue to work for the association and keep you informed.

 

NSSA-NSCA Receives Funding Through PPP

The NSSA-NSCA is committed to continuing to provide timely, quality service to all of our members and member clubs through these challenging times. To that end, the NSSA-NSCA has applied for and received funding through the Payroll Protection Program (PPP) offered by the Small Business Administration (SBA) to provide resources that will be used to maintain staffing so that we can do just that.

Many of our clubs may qualify for PPP funding. We encourage clubs to contact their respective banks to see if they qualify and apply for both federal and state relief funding.
