COVID-19 Update: Postponed or Canceled Events

July 27, 2020 By Sherry Kerr

With concerns about the spread of COVID-19, many shooters and member clubs are making decisions about continuing with planned events. Because our member clubs and their events are throughout the U.S. and beyond, where circumstances vary greatly, each club will make its own decision about any changes in plans. We urge our member clubs and individual members to heed the advice of medical experts and advisories/requirements of their local and state governments regarding hosting and attending events. Please contact clubs directly for any questions about specific events. As we learn about canceled or postponed events, we will add them to the list below, post on our social media pages, and announce in Target Talk.

If an event does not appear below, we have not been notified of cancellation or postponement.

Clubs: If you are cancelling or postponing an event, please notify Sherry Kerr, skerr@nssa-nsca.com, to be included on this list.

Final Shots: George Kenneth “Pappy” Beavers

July 23, 2020 By Sherry Kerr

George Kenneth Beavers, known in the skeet world as GK Beavers or Pappy, passed away on May 28, 2020. Born in 1931, he served in the Army 45th Infantry and was a Korean Veteran, where he was awarded the Army Occupation Medal in Japan, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and Combat Infantry Badge. George retired from Tinker Air Force Base civil service in 1989.

Pappy’s favorite activity was skeet shooting. He started the sport in 1966 and made numerous friends and memories throughout his career, winning several awards and trophies, as well as volunteering as a shoot manager, referee, or whatever capacity he was needed to fill. He shot 215,750 lifetime targets, attended 23 World Skeet Championships, and was an active NSSA member for 49 years.

He was a longtime member of the Tinker Gun Club, Ada Gun Club and OKC Gun Club. He was inducted into the OSSA Hall of Fame in 1986. He and his wife Betty traveled nationwide for skeet shoots and made lifelong friends along the way. He never knew a stranger and was liked and loved by everyone. NSSA extends its condolences to Pappy’s many friends and family.

Donations in his memory can be made to the Lupus Foundation of America, 2121 K Street NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC 20037.

NSSA-NSCA IT Project Update

June 16, 2020 By Sherry Kerr

NSSA-NSCA is currently undertaking a modernization of our IT and software infrastructure to improve communication, services, and data management of our 48,000 members and 600-plus clubs.

The first phase, replacing our 20-year-old database system, started in 2018 and is due to complete in early 2021. The new system allows us to integrate our member services into an online suite of applications that will provide a quicker and simpler way for you to securely interact with Headquarters, clubs, and shoot management.

Our vision for members and member clubs is to use this new application, via secure online access, to view and/or update information for member demographics, shoot registration, annual points competitions, shoot results, shoot searches, and overall records archive.

Your primary online point of access will be through your new member/club portal. You will login to your portal from the NSSA-NSCA website. Once logged in, you will have access to a plethora of information about yourself and NSSA-NSCA. One of the actions we will need you all to undertake when we go live will be to login and validate your personal information.

To have full access to your member information, each member must use an individual email address. An email address can only be registered to one member. If multiple members of your family or shooting squad have previously used one email address, please take a moment to update your contact information at one of these links:

      NSSA Members Update

      NSCA Members Update

As we progress through this multi-phased project, we will post updates to Clay Target Nation, Target Talk, our website, and emails to members with additional information as we prepare to launch our new system. Meanwhile, please stay safe and shoot safe.

Missing the U.S. Open? Shoot the Essential Open

June 15, 2020 By Sherry Kerr

With the inaugural Kolar U.S. Open iShoot postponed until 2021 due to the pandemic and no U.S. Open this year, many members are missing the opportunity to shoot at the much-anticipated event. There is now an event for you to shoot that same weekend, June 27-28, to mirror the format of the U.S. Open iShoot, the 2020 Essential Open iShoot. According to Clark Hartness, the Zone VI Executive Committeeman who created the Essential Open, flexibility is the key, offering the opportunity for any interested NSSA club to host a shoot for its members as part of the iShoot. Clubs can participate as a host club with as few as 5 members shooting.

Currently, the following clubs have signed on to participate, with the possibility of more to come:

Coast Rifle and Pistol – Biloxi, MS
Whitetail Ridge Outdoors – Blue Springs, MS
Capitol Gun Club – Jackson, MS
Starkville Gun Club – Starkville, MS
Memphis Sport Shooting Association – Lakeland, TN
Corpus Christi Gun Club – Corpus Christi, TX
National Shooting Complex – San Antonio, TX
Brown County Sportsmen’s Club – Green Bay, WI
Rochester Brooks Gun Club – Rush, NY
Blue Rock Sportsman Club – North Little Rock, AR
Mahaska County IKES – Oskaloosa, IA
Mesilla Valley Shotgun Sports – Las Cruces, NM
Chaparral Skeet Club – Roswell, NM

Hartness says he registered the 2020 Essential Open iShoot because “I believe it is essential that we return to some semblance of normal, even if it is a new normal.” He will manage the event through the iShoots platform he developed and which would have been used for the U.S. Open iShoot.

To participate, shooters can register at ishoots.org.

Participating clubs must be NSSA member clubs, have a licensed copy of Mike Valerio’s Skeet Manager application (www.skeetsoftware.com), and have internet access. You can download the club invitation for more details. Clubs may contact Clark Hartness for assistance at clark.hartness@zonevi.org or 662-324-5353.

Inaugural Kolar U.S. Open Postponed to 2021

May 8, 2020 By Sherry Kerr

The NSSA Executive Committee, U.S. Open Committee, U.S. Open host clubs, and our sponsor have collaborated and concluded the inaugural Kolar U.S. Open is untenable in the current climate. In accordance with NSSA’s COVID-19 policy, we have placed our members’ health and safety at the forefront of our decision as we considered the respective state parameters and associated risk to host this event.

The inaugural Kolar U.S. Open is rescheduled for June 25-27, 2021. Each of the 10 clubs selected for this year’s event will host in 2021.

Thanks to the 815 registered shooters and their desire to participate in this unique event as we endeavor to expand the U.S. Open to multiple clubs across the United States. Registered participants will receive more information on Monday, May 11, and you can monitor posts at nssausopen.com.

A special thanks for the support and dedication of our host clubs since the inception of the i-shoot U.S. Open format. Each of the clubs has conducted i-shoot training during the previous two months in preparation for this event. Thanks to Clark Hartness for his vision and dedication to build the premiere event.

In closing, a special thanks to our sponsor, Kolar Arms, for their support and desire to pioneer an i-shoot format to a premier NSSA event.

We look forward to the debut of this event in 2021!
