Longtime NSSA Member Harry Frey Passes

August 22, 2016 By Sherry Kerr

Harry FreyNSSA member and friend Julius Harry Frey passed away on August 22 at the age of 93.

Harry was known as a vibrant, energetic, and enthusiastic person. Skeet was his favorite pastime, and he was a 31-year member who shot at 26 World Skeet Championships, including the 2015 shoot. He was named to the All-American teams as Senior Veteran or Super Veteran every year since 2005. In 2014, he won the Armed Forces HOA Super Veteran Class at 91 and was sponsored by Blaser. Harry had 128,554 lifetime targets; in 2013 at 90 years old, he shot 4750 targets, and in 2014, he shot 3729.

He was a Master Mason raised in Bluebonnet Lodge and was a member of Charles Anderson Lodge until his passing. Harry was a member of the Alzafar Shrine Temple, past president of the golf unit, past president and founder of the shotgun unit, and committee member for the Pulling For Kids tournament benefiting Shriners Hospitals. In addition to skeet and his Masonic work, he had many interests such as hunting, motorcycles, and golf.

Harry was born on March 6, 1923 in Laredo, Texas to Julius Harry and Lucille Frey, who preceded him in death. His wife of 47 years, Jerry Ann Woodard Frey, also preceded him in death. Survivors include his sister-in-law Kay Burton and niece Pam Burton of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and nephew Steve Burton and wife Michelle of Amarillo, Texas.

Harry graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1946 after having served six years in the Navy during World War II. He attended Sul Ross University for a short time and later transferred to Trinity University, where he earned a B.S. degree in Social Service in 1949. He went back to Sul Ross University during two summers to earn his teaching certificate. He chose Sul Ross because he could take his horse, as he had an avid interest in roping at that time. Continuing his education, Harry attended Southwest Oklahoma State College where he earned a Master’s of Education degree in 1971. He also received an Industrial Education Certification in 1973 from Texas A&M University. Throughout his post-war years, Harry served as a school administrator in the Eagle Pass ISD and as a vocational instructor, including teaching classes in drafting and industrial arts, principally at MacArthur High School in San Antonio, where he eventually retired.

Harry joined the Navy at 17 years old in 1940 and served on the USS Lexington CV-2. The ship was one of the first to arrive at Pearl Harbor after the attack. From Pearl Harbor he went to the Battle of the Coral Sea where the Lexington went down. Harry also served on the USS Bennington and the USS Card. He was honorably discharged in 1951. His military honors included the American Defense Medal (1 star), Asiatic Pacific Medal (2 stars), American Theater Medal, European African Medal, Victory Medal, and President Unit Citation Award (1 Blue Star).

The Navy will honor him by spreading his ashes (and his wife Jerry’s ashes) over the sunken USS Lexington in the Coral Sea and will give him a 21-gun salute.

There will be a celebration of Harry’ life on September 28, 2016 at the Shrine Auditorium on 1604 and Blanco at 6:30 p.m. with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shriners Children’s Hospital Alzafar Transportation Fund, 901 N. Loop 1604 W., San Antonio, TX 78258. Additional memorials can be made to the High Plains Food Bank, PO Box 31803, Amarillo, TX 79120.

Junior World Skeet Hosts More Than 200

July 31, 2016 By Sherry Kerr

Junior WorldMore than 200 young shooters braved the coastal Georgia heat to enjoy great targets and a weekend of fun at the Junior World Skeet Championships, hosted by Forest City Gun City Club, July 21-24. Sub-Junior, Junior, and Collegiate shooters competed for Over All and Lady championships — along with a year’s bragging rights!

Ice cold bottled water and Powerade on every field helped mitigate some very challenging hot weather for the competitors, and the tireless efforts of Forest City Gun Club, many dedicated volunteers, and generous sponsors ensured everyone had a good time. After-hours entertainment, including an Annie Oakley-style shoot, and 110 quickly-consumed pizzas added to the youth’s enjoyment of the annual event.

The Challenges and Opportunities of Member Communications

July 8, 2016 By Sherry Kerr

clay-target-magYou probably can’t name a sport with memberships more diverse than skeet and sporting clays. Because they can be pursued successfully and with enjoyment by people of virtually any age or gender, we have the good fortune of memberships from young to old, male and female, novice to world championship levels. Members span wide-ranging income levels, vocations, and locations. Some participate in sporting clays or skeet exclusively, while others shoot both sports through dual memberships or the Crossfire program. Our members span all levels of technological expertise.

Target TalkOur diversity presents us not only with the great opportunity to grow our sports and our membership ranks among many demographics, but also with a number of challenges — none greater than how to communicate effectively with everyone when their ages, genders, resources, professions, skills and other measures vary so widely. We need to be able to reach and fill the needs of our current, diverse members while looking ahead to those we hope to attract to membership in the future. At any given time, if we’re not considering both those of us who are already members and our potential future members, we are being short-sighted.

ScreenshotOne element of our approach to that has been to offer a variety of channels of communications so there is something for everyone. We offer a printed magazine, Clay Target Nation, for content that is less time-sensitive and for those who prefer the printed format. We have a digital version of the same for those who like the convenience of their reading materials on an e-reader and who enjoy its interactivity. We produce a weekly e-newsletter, Target Talk, for more time-sensitive content and virtually everything we need to impart to our members. If a member uses a computer, tablet, or smartphone, Target Talk is easily accessible. But did you know we make it available free to anyone who wishes to subscribe, even non-members, for the marketing benefits it offers? We now have over 76,000 subscribers.

Our websites are important communications tools both for regular pages that are always maintained as well as for timely news stories that can be found on the home pages. The websites are so important that we have invested in an all-new platform that can grow as needed and allow us to offer new features in the coming weeks, months, and years. The websites are not only essential to member business but also to prospective members, for whom the website is often our first means of communication.

On an as-needed basis when a particular topic needs attention or we need to reach a segment of our membership, we do email blasts. We maintain social media pages where we distribute content and respond to members who reach out to us there. We provide a text-messaging service at major events and have assisted some member clubs in offering a similar service.

There is more on the way, and we’re sure there are other niches we can fill. For example, we know our member clubs are your day-to-day connection to the sports, and we want to help them communicate better with you. Some of our clubs do a wonderful job of communicating with shooters already, while others could benefit from some guidance to help them improve. We want to offer them that help, in part by sharing the good practices of those clubs doing it well. One way we will be offering help to clubs is through a club newsletter we will launch soon.

Communication goes in both directions. That’s why every issue of Target Talk includes multiple links to reach us. It also tells you how to reach Clay Target Nation. Did you know you can click “Reply” on any issue of Target Talk — or any other email you get from us, for that matter — to send us an email? Every issue of Clay Target Nation also includes our contact information. At the top of our website, on every page, you will find a “Contact” link that takes you to contact information for any person at headquarters you need to reach. Our “Sound Off” feature in Clay Target Nation is a small way of asking any and every member for their thoughts.

Because communicating well with our members is so important to us, the September issue of Clay Target Nation will launch a new column from Director of Communications, Sherry Kerr. She will use it to tell you more about the communications channels we’re offering, how we’re expanding them, and how you can participate.

For now, you should know this:

We want you to contribute to your publications, and your ideas are always welcome. Have a question? Why not get the answer straight from us? You can email us at ClayTargetNation@nssa-nsca.com, TargetTalk@nssa-nsca.com, or to a specific person listed on our Staff Directory.

Skeet Shooter Lee Staska Passes

July 7, 2016 By Sherry Kerr

Lee StaskaLouise Terry reports the sad news that Lee Staska, 72, long-time skeet shooter from Atlanta, GA, died on July 7, 2016 from brain cancer.

“Lee was a member of our five-man skeet team from Wolf Creek/Tom Lowe Shooting Grounds during the years when I lived in Georgia from 1986 to 1993,” said Terry. “He had a great sense of humor, always wore a smile, and loved life. Lee was passionate about his shooting and shot skeet, some sporting clays, and hunted birds right up until the time of his illness.

“He was a great friend who will be missed by all of his shooting and hunting buddies.”

Anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in Lee’s memory can do so by sending a donation to the American Brain Tumor Association,  8550 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., Suite 550, Chicago, IL  60631, www.abta.org.

NSSA and Lee’s skeet friends extend our sincerest condolences to Kim, his wife of 28 years, and to his family.
