SCTP/SASP Nationals at Cardinal Center

July 22, 2017 By Sherry Kerr

Buckeye Elite
Members of the Buckeye Elite Shooting Team compete at the SCTP Nationals.

The 2017 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) National Championships brought together competitive shooters, ages 8 to 23, from 32 states to compete for national titles in the shotgun disciplines of Skeet, Skeet Doubles, Sporting Clays, American Trap, Handicap Trap, Bunker Trap, and Trap Doubles. Pistol and rifle competitors competed for action steel-shooting titles in Rimfire Pistol, Centerfire Pistol, Iron Sight Rifle and Optics Rifle divisions. The event was July 8-15 at Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio.

This was SCTP-SASP’s largest Nationals since the inception of its umbrella organization, the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) in 2007, with 213 SCTP and 49 SASP registered teams participating. With 916 registered skeet competitors and 1002 registered sporting clays competitors during the week-long event, SCTP Nationals will likely be the largest registered skeet tournament this year and among the top 5 of the NSCA registered tournaments this year.

  • 1,043,100 Competitive rounds were fired by 2,687 shooting sports competitors from 32 states during the 8-day event. Including games and practice, approximately 1.4 million rounds were fired.
  • Participation in the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) increased 19.5%, from 2013 to 2017 (from 1883 to 2251 athletes)
  • Participation in the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) increased 119%, from 2013 to 2017 (from 199 to 436 athletes)
  • Women are the fastest growing segment of the shooting sports, making up 18% of the National Championship competitors (16% of SCTP shooters, 30% of SASP shooters).
  • This year teams earned $425,000 (SCTP) and $84,750 (SASP) in MidwayUSA Foundation Team Endowment Funds .
  • With the support of many industry friends and supporting sponsors, including NSSA-NSCA, SSSF has awarded $100,000 in scholarships to SCTP and SASP member athletes this season.
  • SCTP and SASP make up the largest youth shooting program in the country with over 16,211 youth athletes in 45 states (14,854 in SCTP and 1,357 in SASP) participating as member athletes this year.
  • 6.3 million clay targets were thrown during the 2016-17 SCTP competition season (based on school year cycle) as recorded by the SSSF’s team registration and event management system.

SSSF BOD Chairman Louise Terry summarized the event saying, “The SCTP/SASP Nationals, held each year in July, has grown as the programs have grown over the years, and has now become THE major event in our annual schedule. For our team coaches, student athletes and their families, it represents the culmination of all of their hard work throughout the past school year and gives them the opportunity to spend a week with their families and teams participating in the shooting sports that they love. Competition is by age category, so kids of all ages are competing against their peers from all across the country in their own age groups. There is tremendous camaraderie, and many new friendships are made while old ones are renewed.”

Immediately following the SCTP/SASP Nationals on July 24-29, the SCTP staff will host the 2017 SCTP International Shotgun Championships at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, in conjunction with USA Shooting.

Next year’s SCTP/SASP Nationals will be July 14-21, 2018, and it will again be hosted at the Cardinal Center.

Arizona State Champ, Brian Anderson, Passes

July 13, 2017 By Sherry Kerr

On June 19 the skeet shooting community lost a great competitor and true ambassador to the shooting sports, Brian S. Anderson. Throughout his life, Brian participated in a number of shooting sports, settling into the game of skeet in 2009. In eight short years, Brian established himself as an accomplished competitor, skeet supporter, as well as a coach in Phoenix, Arizona, and Rockford, Illinois.

If Brian wasn’t in Rockford attending to his automotive business, he could be found in the early morning on the skeet fields with his wife Judy at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix. If asked when he would be at the club next, his answer was, “I only shoot on days that end in Y.” Brian never practiced alone, drawing adult and youth shooters alike, working on his game as well as coaching others, in particular helping with new young competitors. Brian was the “go-to guy” for parents looking for instruction, advice on what gun to buy their son or daughter, sourcing reloading components, and any of the myriad questions shooters new to the sport always have. He always obliged whatever the request and took great pleasure in helping others in a sport that he loved.

All that practice and concentration on the overall game paid off with Brian winning the HOA Arizona State Titles in 2016 and 2017, as well as posting numerous AA/AAA scores at other competitions in Arizona and the World Skeet Championships. In addition to competition, Brian was a Director on the Board of Claybusters of Arizona, the current vice-president of the Arizona Skeet Shooting Association, an active SCTP shotgun coach, and a Level 1 NSSA Certified Instructor.

Always calm and unassuming, Brian made his mark on the sport and so many lives through his actions and the example he lived. Our sport needs people like Brian and although his life and time to participate in this great sport was cut short, he left an example for many to follow, and a legacy of young, accomplished skeet shooters lining up to climb on the winners’ podium.

Jimmy Bealmear Memorial Shoot at LRSTC

June 25, 2017 By Sherry Kerr

Jimmy BealmearLoch Raven Skeet and Trap Center (LRSTC) will host its first Jimmy Bealmear Memorial Shoot on September 23-24 in honor of its long-time member who passed away in January.

Jimmy started shooting skeet when he was only 8 years of age and first attended the Loch Raven Skeet and Trap Center (LRSTC) back in the 1960s. By the time he was 15, he was competing in the sport at the national level as an NSSA member. Over the years, this amazing shooter shot over 128,500 registered targets and won numerous yearly state and zone championships.

Early on, Jimmy was taken under the wing of LRSTC founder Harry Wright, but the real key to Jim’s shooting seems to have been his incredible dedication and concentration. By starting to shoot so early in life, Jimmy Bealmear had to hold the gun below his shoulder to get his head on the stock. That gun mount technique stayed with Jimmy his entire life. To others it may have looked awkward; but it was Jimmy’s trademark gun mount and he was deadly with it.

Jimmy Bealmear was recognized by the Maryland Skeet Shooting Association as a member of the Maryland State Team based on overall average in all four gauges, NSSA standards, targets shot, and attendance at the State Shoot. The records for the Maryland State Team are a bit sketchy prior to 1976, but to the extent they are available, they show that Jim was a member of that team in 11 years between 1981 and 2002.

When Jimmy was diagnosed with cancer in 2016, he made the decision to give back to the skeet shooting community by sponsoring a shoot in his name. In January of this year, Jim passed away, and the first Jimmy Bealmear Memorial will be held in September, with the plan to continue it as an annual event.

Jimmy wanted to make this shoot special and created a trust to fund some special prizes and events. The HOA champ will receive $1000, each gauge gun champ will receive $500, and Doubles gun champ will receive $200. There will be cash awards for second and third gun champs as well. LRSTC will be returning $12 of entry fees back to class and adding $50 to class first to increase those prizes as well. A special shoot-off will be held in 20 gauge for classes A – D. Anyone not in the running for a class purse will be able to shoot off for a flat of shells for first, 6 boxes for second, and 4 boxes for third in each class. A reception and dinner will be held on Saturday night in Jimmy’s honor.

More information can be found at www.lochravenskeettrap.com or contact the LRSTC skeet chair at skeetchair@lochravenskeettrap.com.
