NSSA-NSCA Warns of Phishing Scam

October 17, 2018 By Sherry Kerr

We have learned that some of our members have received an email that claims to be from NSSA-NSCA but is not. It claims to be soliciting financial support from our members for a GoFundMe account named “Support Anderson Recovery.” This is a scam, apparently a phishing attempt to collect your financial information. The email shows an NSSA logo, and the “from” email address appears to be ours — but it is not. Last year, a similar phishing email (right) used the same photo and a different name and story. Other organizations have also been targeted, using the same photo. Here is what you should know:

  • This email is not from NSSA or NSCA or in any way connected to us.
  • While we have occasionally included mentions of requests for financial support in our Target Talk newsletter, that is the only way you will see that type of request in an email from us. We do not send out independent GoFundMe emails or anything similar supporting a specific cause.
  • If you received this email, do not click on any link. Report it as spam if your email provider gives you this option, then delete it.
  • If you ever receive an email that appears to be from us that you find questionable, do not click on any link. Instead, forward it to skerr@nssa-nsca.com to inquire if NSSA-NSCA sent it.

World Shoot Class Winners to Receive Commemorative Guns

August 19, 2018 By Sherry Kerr

The 2018 World Skeet Championships will again offer a popular award for all class champions in the 12 Gauge, 20 Gauge, 28 Gauge, .410 Bore, and Doubles events. Each champion will receive a custom-engraved 2018 World Skeet Championships commemorative shotgun as part of the awards package.

A commemorative Remington 1100 with select, high-gloss wood, deep bluing, a gold-plated trigger and World Shoot logo engraving will be awarded to each of the 31 class winners. The matching gauge or bore of the gun will coincide with the event for which it is won. For example, the 12 gauge E class champion will be awarded a 12 gauge gun.

The gun award presents an exciting opportunity for shooters of all levels to win a classic shotgun at a world-class event. This will be the third year for the popular class award.

If you haven’t yet registered for the 2016 World Skeet Championships, sign up today.

CDR Cotton Talbott Passes

August 19, 2018 By Sherry Kerr

We’re saddened to report that NSSA Hall of Fame and Armed Forces Hall of Fame inductee CDR Merrill Lee “Cotton” Talbott, USN Ret., passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at the age of 87.

CDR Talbott was inducted into the NSSA Hall of Fame in 2014 as the Ray Boller Award recipient. He proposed the founding of the Armed Forces Skeet Association and served as one of its first officers. In addition, Cotton served on several of the AFSA officer leadership boards and committees, was inducted into the AFSA Hall of Fame in 1991, and in 2014 earned the Pletcher Award for his service to the association and skeet shooting. In 2011, Cotton was selected as one of AFSA’s Directors Emeritus and continued to provide guidance and mentorship until his passing. Although Cotton didn’t compete in many of the most recent championships, he was always in attendance and willingly offered his advice to those who sought it.

Services at St. Timothy United Methodist Church are pending. You can view his full obituary here. NSSA extends its condolences to CDR Talbott’s many friends and family.

Final Shots: John Dinning

August 11, 2018 By Sherry Kerr

John Dinning

We are saddened to report the passing of John B. Dinning, Sr., on July 27 at the age of 91. Dinning was a member of the NSSA Hall of Fame and a Life Member of Loch Raven Skeet and Trap Center in Maryland. NSSA Executive Committee Member Alessandro Vitale remembered Dinning as a true gentleman. “He was my coach when I was in high school,” said Vitale. “He taught for the love of skeet; his pay was seeing the joy of others breaking targets.”

Always an outdoorsman and avid shotgunner, he found his way to the Loch Raven Skeet and Trap Center soon after it opened in the late 1950s.

Among his survivors is his wife Kathleen “Tucky” Dinning, who is also in the NSSA Hall of Fame, as well as a son and two daughters.

You can read his full obituary here.
